The North Island of New Zealand really has it all; from beaches and mountains, to forests and farms, to history and culture.
Meaning ‘North Wind’ in Maori, Hauraki is a 12 day tour that encompasses breathtaking scenery, community involvement, cultural insight, and outdoor adventures.
This is a comprehensive tour of the North Island like no other!
This is a comprehensive New Zealand North Island Tour like no other!
Day 1: The voyage begins! Today enjoy exploring the ‘City of Sails’ before meeting the rest of your group for the all-important welcome meeting.
Day 2: Today we start as we mean to go on and after a scenic boat ride across the Hauraki Gulf we arrive at our volunteer project. We learn about the massive ecological and cultural restoration efforts taking place on these ‘Treasure Islands’ and together with local volunteers we spend the day getting our hands dirty – literally!
Day 3: We depart Auckland City and head out to Auckland’s dominant wine growing region stopping at a family owned and operated winery for a tour, tasting, and lunch. We stop and marvel at a West Coast beach with it’s black sand and abundant wildlife before heading to our home for the night on the Hokianga Harbour. Our day is completed with a magical tour of Waipoua Forest at dusk.
Day 4: It’s on to the beautiful Bay of Islands via a working bee farm and the historic Waitangi Treaty grounds where we enjoy a private tour. We base ourselves in charming Russell for the next two nights.
Day 5: Do as little or as much as you want today. We can make arrangements for you or just wave hi at breakfast – it’s up to you!
Day 6: Travelling down the east coast this time, we head to our second volunteer project of the tour. This one is super special as we have the privilege to be welcomed on to a marae and stay the night in the wharenui or meeting house. This is an experience you will never forget!
Day 7: It’s an early start as we head down to the Coromandel in time to board our boat for Cathedral Cove. Snorkelling is an option during this boat trip and highly recommended in this stunning marine reserve!
Day 8: Dig your own hot pool today at Hot Water Beach. Then take some time to wander round the coastal town of Whitianga before taking a lesson in bone carving and creating your very own pendant. You could even wear it tonight at Mitai Village for our Maori cultural performance and dinner. After dinner we get special entry into Kiwi Encounter to see our iconic national symbol, up close and personal.
Day 9: The day is all yours! Enjoy it at your leisure.
Day 10: The scenery changes dramatically again today as we travel on to the Central Plateau. We base ourselves here to get the best possible run at tomorrow….
Day 11: Voted one of the best day hikes in the world, the Tongariro Crossing is no small feat and definitely hard on the feet! But the aches and pains are worth it as we are expertly guided across this stunning alpine environment.
Day 12: Give your feet a rest as we travel the lower North Island arriving into Wellington, our “Coolest Little Capital”. Enjoy a guided tour of our national museum Te Papa before sitting down with friends at our Farewell dinner in celebration of our Hauraki Voyage.
