Explore the stunning scenery of the South Island
The South Island of New Zealand is all about the drama! From snow-capped mountains, and huge high-country farming stations to palm trees, rainforests, and giant waterfalls.
Our 14 day South Island Tour certainly lives up to its namesake Pounamu – New Zealand’s highly prized stone that depicts strength, beauty, and status, and a treasure that is only found in the South Island.
Join us on this New Zealand South Island Tour and you might just find some treasure of your own!
Day 1: Welcome to Nelson! This is New Zealand’s city with the most sunshine hours so get out and explore before our Welcome meeting this evening.
Day 2: The Nelson Markets are renowned for delicious, fresh and local produce, and great coffee so what a great way to fuel up before this afternoon’s walk and kayak adventure in our smallest National Park – Abel Tasman.
Day 3: Leaving Nelson behind we make our way to our first volunteer project – this is what we came for! After some hard but rewarding work we relax for a night in beautiful Blenheim.
Day 4: A must-do in this wine region we take a guided wine tour by bike around some of Marlborough’s favourite wineries. Then it’s on to the beautiful seaside town of Kaikoura where we have the option to go whale watching by boat or plane! Back on the road we head inland to the thermal resort town of Hanmer Springs.
Day 5: A free day in Hanmer Springs, a great place to relax or explore, it’s up to you.
Day 6: It’s a very early start to catch the TranzAlpine train from Springfield Station in the East to Greymouth on the West Coast. After enjoying a tour of the Monteiths Brewery we take a quick jaunt up to Punakaiki to see the Pancake Rocks and then coast back down to the “Cool Little Town” of Hokitika. Settle in – we’re here for the next two nights.
Day 7: It’s our second day of volunteering today with a very dedicated bunch of locals. And tonight we meet some other locals…glowworms.
Day 8: Glacier country here we come! We arrive into Fox Glacier in time for you to choose your glacial adventure, literally! If weather permits we highly recommend the Heli Hike which puts you on to the Fox Glacier – a truly unforgettable experience!
Day 9: Say goodbye to the West Coast but not before a jet-boat safari up the Haast River and into this stunning World Heritage Area. Then it’s on to the Adventure Capital of New Zealand – Queenstown!
Day 10: Free day – do as much or as little as you like today – it’s your choice.
Day 11: Experience one of New Zealand’s Great Walks as we are expertly guided for the day hiking the famous Routeburn track.
Day 12: Rest the feet today as we travel to Milford Sound. This road trip is just as picturesque as the fjord itself as we travel through the heart of Southland and into Fiordland National Park. This afternoon we experience the majestic Milford Sound by boat before bedding down at the luxurious Milford Lodge.
Day 13: Northward bound today we stop at charming Arrowtown followed by a wine tour, tasting and light lunch at Gibbston Valley – home to the region’s oldest vineyard and country’s largest wine cave. Then onwards to our Rural Farmstay for the night – this will be a highlight!
Day 14: We say goodbye to our farming friends and travel across the Canterbury Plains into Christchurch. You will have time to explore the ‘Garden City’ before our farewell dinner – a celebration of the voyage that has been and the friendships that will continue.
